Overview
An inexpensive compost bin can be made out of a trash can and can work just as well as the pricey store-bought ones. Compost bins in stores cost anywhere from $100 to $300, but a trash can only costs about $20. With these directions you can be on your way to recycling your kitchen scraps and making nutrient-rich fertilizer without spending a fortune.
Step 1
Clean your plastic trash and lid with soap and water. Even if the trash can is new you should clean it to prevent your compost from being contaminated with chemicals that might have been used to manufacture the trash can.
Step 2
Drill four four evenly spaced holes in the bottom of the trash can around the edges. Drill a fifth hole in the middle of the bottom of the trash can. These holes will allow for the drainage of excess moisture from your compost pile.
Step 3
Drill random holes along the side of the trash can. The holes should be about eight inches apart. The space between the holes does not have to be exact. These holes will provide air circulation for your compost pile.
Step 4
Clean the trash can with soap and water to remove any remnants of plastic from drilling so that they do not get in your compost pile.
Step 5
Place the trash can lid on the top of the trash can after you have started your compost pile. The lid is used to help keep the compost warm which speeds decomposition and keeps rodents and insects out. Your homemade compost bin is now ready for use. Look at the resource section for instructions on how to build a compost pile.
